Bernard Chant

Bernard Chant was a legendary French perfumer and one of the defining creative forces in 20th-century fragrance. He spent much of his career at International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF), where he rose to the role of head perfumer and helped shape what many consider the modern “American school” of prestige perfumery.

Chant became famous for intricate, patchouli-powdered chypre constructions, often enriched with mossy, leathery and subtly animalic nuances. His perfumes were built as layered architectures—complex yet seemingly effortless—marked by meticulous attention to detail and a powerful emotional presence on the skin.

Known as a demanding, perfectionist creator, he constantly refined his formulas until every ingredient fell into place like a note in a symphony. His legacy lives on in today’s understanding of modern chypres, characterful masculine fragrances and rich, textured compositions designed not just to project, but to seduce up close
