Edmond Roudnitska (1905–1996) was a French master perfumer born in Nice and widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century perfumery. He trained in Grasse in the 1920s at Roure Bertrand Dupont, first analysing natural and synthetic raw materials and then composing both perfume bases and finished fragrances for major houses.
In 1946 he founded his own independent laboratory, Art et Parfum, near Grasse, giving himself full creative freedom and composing landmark scents that helped define modern perfumery. Roudnitska championed a pared-down, minimalist style focused on clarity, balance and abstraction, and wrote influential books on the aesthetics of smell that framed perfumery as a true art form. His legacy lives on through his writings, his iconic creations and the work of his son, perfumer Michel Roudnitska
