Gil Clavien

Gil Clavien is a Swiss perfumer, fluent in French, English and German, who first studied Biology at the University of Geneva before turning to fragrance creation. After completing her master’s degree, she entered Firmenich’s intensive internal perfumery training and began her career as a perfumer in Switzerland, later working in Germany and at the company’s office in Japan. She is now a Principal Perfumer at dsm-firmenich, based in the United States.

Travel has always been central to her life and work. Professionally and personally, she thrives on cultural immersion: from the warmth and generosity she encountered in Mexico to watching Nureyev dance in an ancient Greek amphitheatre, witnessing religious rituals in Thailand, and exploring gardens and shrines across Japan, Indonesia and South Africa—each place adding new layers to her olfactory vocabulary.

Clavien describes herself as highly organised, someone who loves lists and preparation, and this discipline underpins her creative freedom. Her fragrances are known for meticulous detail and a refined sensuality, blending classic materials with modern innovations to craft balanced, cocooning and evocative compositions that evolve at their own rhythm on the skin and spark the wearer’s imagination.
