John Gamba

John Gamba is an American perfumer and Senior Perfumer at Givaudan, based in New York City. His story with scent began in his Sicilian grandmother’s garden, where he learned to crush basil leaves between his fingers to keep their green aroma on his skin—a small childhood ritual that became the foundation of his olfactory imagination.

With a background in chemistry, he started out as a lab technician at the historic house Dragoco, then trained as an apprentice under several master perfumers. Those years brought his first major commercial successes and shaped his reputation as a versatile creator, equally at ease with fine fragrance as with bath and body lines, and particularly skilled at translating a scent from one format to another—turning a perfume into a shower gel, lotion or mist while preserving its character.

Gamba draws much of his inspiration from cooking and gardening, with a special love for spices that highlight the herbal, aromatic side of a composition without overwhelming it. Fond of rich yet polished structures built around woods, amber, musk and a precise touch of sweetness, he has created fragrances for a wide range of international brands, always aiming for technically refined yet soulful perfumes that feel warm, comforting and quietly sophisticated on the skin.
