Nicolas (Nicholas) Calderone is a perfumer with a long-standing career at International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF), where he has quietly shaped part of modern fragrance history. His portfolio includes creations for major global brands such as Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, Estée Lauder and Liz Claiborne.
He is best known for DKNY Cashmere Mist, which began as a scent for a bath line before becoming an iconic eau de toilette and eau de parfum, built around bergamot, suede, jasmine, lily of the valley, woods, musk and vanilla. Calderone also contributed to Estée Lauder’s Beautiful, signed the original Liz Claiborne fragrance and composed classics such as Lauren for Ralph Lauren, Volupté for Oscar de la Renta and Lauder for Men.
Alongside his work for fashion and beauty houses, he has taken part in historical reconstruction projects, applying analytical chemistry and creative intuition to revive ancient scents—most notably helping elaborate a perfume based on materials discovered in an Egyptian tomb. His style is associated with sensual, cocooning compositions where classical florals and ambery-woody structures are softened by suede, musk, sandalwood and vanilla, creating a refined yet comforting trail on the skin.
