Stephen Nilsen

Stephen Nilsen is an American perfumer with a strong background in chemical engineering. Born and raised in the United States, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he also obtained a French language certificate, then went on to complete a PhD in Chemical Engineering at Stanford University. His path into fragrance began when a National Geographic article on perfumery and a high-school experiment synthesizing aroma molecules revealed how chemistry could open the door to an entirely new, invisible art.

Nilsen first trained as a flavorist at Procter & Gamble, gaining hands-on expertise in taste and aroma, before transitioning fully into perfumery. He later joined Quest International—eventually acquired by Givaudan—as a perfumer and is now a Senior / VP Perfumer in Givaudan’s fine fragrance division in New York, creating scents for both major international brands and niche, more experimental projects.

His style is refined and meticulously balanced, marked by a strong sense of structure and harmony between ingredients. Comfortable crafting everything from instantly appealing gourmand fragrances to opulent white florals, Nilsen brings a scientist’s precision to compositions designed to tell stories and evolve beautifully over time on the skin—complex, textural perfumes with real emotional impact.
