1988 is part of Floris's "The Fragrance Journals" series, which captures the soul and heart of London over different decades. It is a tribute to the city, its social fabric and its people, reflecting its ability to adapt to the changes while maintaining its distinctive identity.
The Spanish Juan Famenias Floris departed from Menorca towards Montpellier (France), the mecca of perfume in the eighteenth century, to learn the secrets of creating fragrances. From there, he embarks on his great adventure to London, buys no 89 from Jermyn Street where he implants in 1730 his barbeque and comb manufacturing business. Juan Floris, with nostalgia of the aromas of his home in Menorca, also begins to recreate those fragrances in the tranche of No 89, mixing essential oils as he had learned in Montpellier. The mixture of ingredients, imported from Europe, was made individually for each client and the formulas were recorded to be able to reproduce them to the extent of their needs. These few fragrances have remained in the heart of Floris until now as part of the Classical Collection.
In the entrepreneurial spirit of Juan Floris -in 1730 the perfumes were an authentic novelty and Jermyn Street was the epicenter of the high bourgeoisie in London- and with its innovative vision when creating custom fragrances, the barbery was transformed into an elegant selling space of eau de toilette and exclusive accessories such as the hand-made pefiles of Menorca, brushes of shaves.
Floris turned 285 in 2015. It is the oldest independent British perfume family in the world and the only perfume house designated to the Queen. The family of Juan Floris is currently in the eighth and ninth generation. They carry the business with pride and with the same premises on Jermyn Street's No. 89, using their knowledge and based on the heritage of the art of fragrances from generation to generation, creating exquisite perfumes that resist the passage of time and products for body care.
