Aimé Guerlain (1834–1910) was a French master perfumer and the second generation to lead olfactory creation at the family house. Son of founder Pierre-François-Pascal Guerlain, he grew up between the Paris boutique and the lab, learning the craft of blending rare raw materials from an early age.
After his father’s death in 1864, Aimé became the house perfumer while his brother Gabriel managed the business. Described by the brand itself as “the father of modern perfumery”, he steered Guerlain towards ever more luxurious compositions and created groundbreaking fragrances such as Jicky (1889), among the first to combine synthetic molecules and naturals in a truly modern way. He also helped professionalise the craft, taking part in early perfumers’ associations and mentoring his nephew Jacques, who would become one of the 20th century’s most important creators.
