The Origins of Ben Gorham: Turning Memories into Fragrance

Founded in Stockholm in 2006 by Ben Gorham and part of the Spanish group Puig since 2022, Byredo has transformed contemporary perfumery. Its approach was born not in the traditional ateliers of Grasse, but from the conviction that scent is the most powerful vehicle for capturing emotions and memories. With a spare, distinctly Nordic aesthetic, the Swedish house has established itself as a global benchmark for those seeking a personality of their own within niche perfumery.

The origins of Ben Gorham: memories turned into scent

Ben Gorham, a former professional basketball player of Indian-Canadian descent and a fine-arts graduate, broke into the sector with no classical training as a perfumer. That outsider's perspective allowed him to challenge the rigid codes of the industry.

The name of the house harks back to the old English expression "by redolence". Gorham treats each formula as an exercise in emotional distillation: rather than crowding his compositions with dozens of layered nuances, he favours short formulas built on a handful of ingredients of the highest purity, where every note is perceived with clarity.

True to that philosophy, the brand does away with gender labels to create universal scents, presented in cylindrical bottles of clear glass topped with its signature magnetic black cap of industrial design.

Beyond perfume: Ben Gorham's lifestyle vision

Byredo's world extends well beyond liquid perfumery: it conceives of scent as part of the space around us and of personal care.

Its home line is distinguished by its candles in hand-blown black glass, such as the Summer Rain Fragranced Candle, which recreates the atmosphere of a summer after the rain through notes of basil, fig and ginger.

The house also carries its olfactory pyramids into daily rituals with moisturising formulas such as La Tulipe Body Cream and Rose of No Man's Land Body Lotion, which prolong the fragrance's staying power on the skin.

FAQs

What does the brand name Byredo mean?

It comes from the old English expression "by redolence", which can be rendered as "through scent" or "by the resonance of a smell", referring to the power of perfume to evoke specific memories and emotions.

Why are Byredo fragrances unisex?

Ben Gorham believes that scents have no inherent gender. The house does away with traditional marketing stereotypes so that each person can freely choose the composition that best suits their skin and personality.

What is the difference between the Eau de Parfum and Absolu de Parfum versions?

The Absolu de Parfum editions are a more concentrated, purer interpretation of the original formula. They contain a higher percentage of essential oils, which intensifies the base notes and gives greater depth and longevity on the skin.

A couple of choices I made as a translator worth flagging: I kept the French product tiers (Eau de Parfum, Absolu de Parfum) and house terminology as they appear on Byredo's own English-language site, and rendered chicozapote as "sapodilla" (Byredo itself calls this note "Jamaican nesberry" in English, so let me know if you'd prefer that wording).
