Jean Carles

Jean Carles (1892–1966) was a French master perfumer born in Grasse, the world’s perfume capital. Largely self-taught at first, he joined Roure Bertrand in Grasse at a young age and went on to become one of the key architects of 20th-century French perfumery.

In 1946 he founded and directed the Roure Perfumery School in Grasse—today’s Givaudan Perfumery School—and created the famous “Jean Carles Method”, a systematic way of training the nose and learning raw materials that is still used in perfumery education. The author of landmarks such as Tabu, Canoe, Shocking, Ma Griffe and Miss Dior, he is remembered for his analytical, step-by-step approach to composing fragrances and for clear, solidly built olfactory structures.
