Jean-Claude Ellena

Jean-Claude Ellena is a distinguished French perfumer celebrated for his minimalist, poetic, and deeply contemplative style. Born in Grasse in 1947 into a family of perfumers, he began his career in the Chiris fragrance house before enrolling in the inaugural perfumery school at Givaudan in Geneva. He later worked with elite fragrance houses, most notably serving as in-house perfumer for Hermès from 2004 to 2016, and collaborating with names like Frédéric Malle, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Bulgari.

Ellena is famed for his subtle approach: he aims for fragrance to feel like an “olfactive whisper” rather than a loud statement. Among his signature creations are Un Jardin sur le Nil, Terre d’Hermès, the “Les Jardins Hermès” series, and Hermès colognes. Since 2019, he has served as Director of Olfactory Creation at Le Couvent, championing contemporary perfumery rooted in natural materials. He is also the author of Journal d’un Parfumeur and The Diary of a Nose, sharing his introspective philosophy on the craft of scent.
